How to tell a fake from a real gem?

I just recently found a small diamond (or what I think is a diamond) outside on my street that looked like it popped out of a ring. I can't tell if it's real and I'm not sure how much an appraisal would cost. Is there any way to tell if a gem is fake without using an appraiser's eye gl thingy?
