OK, does anyone end up NOT going out because of toddler behaviour?

My daughter was always so good. Scarily good. We would go to cafes, restaurants, over to friends' places. No problem. But my son (now 3) is hell on wheels. We get tantrums and hissy fits, whining, you name it. So most of the time I end up getting him babysat or not going out at all. Yes, I know this isn't teaching him anything but I'm hoping in a year or so he'll be more reasonable. Can't deal with the stress at the moment. Anyone else have a toddler who is a public liability? Or is our family just freaky? ;)
