Clical Napoleonic Formation Battles?

How would they start? would everyone get in formation right away and do the old "load and shoot and load again", or if there was no strong leadership on either side, would they just rambo it and go solo? Was everything just muskets or where there swords and axes every now and then? I think ive seen old drawings with soldiers with spears or pikes, but everyone used bayonets, didnt they?
